I can’t believe Black History Month is almost over. Since I love to travel, I started wondering what little known facts exist that connect Black History to travel. Suddenly, I remembered that on my trip to Detroit last year, I visited the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. One exhibit I thought was fascinating was called And Still We Rise. Part of the exhibit, “Mapping the Michigan Green Book”, highlighted how Black Detroiters vacationed in and around the state of Michigan. As I walked around looking at pictures, maps, and samples of the Michigan Green Book, I learned more about Victor Hugo Green. He wrote the first travel guide for African Americans in the U.S. known as “The Green Book”. Many versions were published between 1936 and 1966, highlighting hotels, gas stations, and restaurants willing to do business with African Americans during a time when Jim Crow laws and segregation made parts of the country unsafe for them to travel. The Charles H. Wright Museum is in the heart of Detroit in the city’s Midtown Region. #thrumylens
